Lani Tupu was born and bought up in New Zealand. He graduated from the Rongotai College and went on to study teaching at the Teachers’ Training College located in Wellington. In 1977, he got a Queen Elizabeth 11 Arts Council Bursary which enabled him to study at the New Zealand Drama School from where he graduated in 1978. In 1985 he moved to Australia to pursue his acting career. He is one of the founding members of Australia’s Walkers And Talkers theatre group. Besides being an actor. Lani is also an artist and his work includes scenery of places he has visited, abstracts, composites and theme based series. Lani is a well known name in the Australian and New Zealand entertainment industry. He has featured in television shows like Mission: Impossible, Police Rescue, G.P., Water Rats, Flipper, House Gang, The Lost World, Revelations, Stringers, Monarch Cove and Home and Away besides playing the role of Captain Bialar Crais and doing the voice over for the character of Pilot on the science fiction series Farscape. Lani has also worked in the movies Send a Gorilla, The Punisher, Lantana, Liquid Bridge, The Condemned and Welcome Home. Besides he has also directed and acted in the movie Talk of the Town. During his career, Lani has been nominated for many prestigious awards both in Australia and New Zealand.

Role in Farscape

In Farscape, he has played the role of Captain Bialar Crais besides doing the voice over for the character of Pilot. Crais is an officer of the Peacekeepers. Initially, he persistently pursues Moya and its crew to avenge his brother’s death who was killed when he accidentally collided with Moya on its exit from the wormhole. However, later Scorpius’ attitude forces him to leave the Peacekeepers and join Moya’s crew. Pilot, on the other hand, is an animated puppet who is the pilot of Moya. He is biologically connected to Moya’s nervous system and is the ships voice for the crew.
